It took us all Saturday morning to prepare for their arrival. Macaroni cheese made up and into the oven. Salad nicely prepped with a light dressing. Feeling my fingers around the Isofix bars and clicking into position the jaws at the back of Grace’s car seat. Beds made up… The mac cheese disappeared without traceContinue reading “Forbidden Corner, The Strangest Place on Earth”

Amy’s New Friend
a story for Sam and Grace, by Grandpa John “What a nice set of biscuits you’ve made!” said Grandma, spooning a few crumbs into her mouth. “But this time, Amy, there’s one more job to do before you lick the spoons. We’ve got to put smarties in the middle to make their noses, then someContinue reading “Amy’s New Friend”
Bad Thursday
that is, the Thursday before Easter “Aw, thanks Wendy,” we said, as the café owner deposited a tray on our table. This held four steaming mugs of tea; our bacon sandwiches; jars of ketchup and brown sauce. It was warm for the time of year, so we’d decided to sit outside looking onto the road,Continue reading “Bad Thursday”
Half Term Fun, Games and Gismos
[The cover picture is AI-generated, not showing ‘actual’ children] “Hello Trainer, are you ready for your Pokemon journey? I can read your mind and guess which Pokemon you’re thinking of. You just have to picture it in your mind and answer my question. If I can guess which Pokemon it is, it will be addedContinue reading “Half Term Fun, Games and Gismos”
Party Time in South London
“Don’t worry, Grace”, said I to our 3-year-old granddaughter as she sat shivering in her pushchair. “We’re all wet and cold, but we’re nearly there. We can get warm in the Horniman museum….Hey?? What’s this notice strapped to the railings? “No way, it can’t be closed – it’s the one place we thought wouldn’t beContinue reading “Party Time in South London”
How to fail gloriously
Cover photograph from Wikipedia “I’m sorry, Mum and Dad, we can’t go any further. The path peters out with a sheer drop below it. Sam? Sam? Are you alright?” “Yes, Daddy,” replied our 7-year-old grandson, unaware of the perils below, from his perch about 15 feet up on the wooded cliff ahead. “You need toContinue reading “How to fail gloriously”
A Wet(tish) Weekend in London
“Can I have some water please?” And then it struck me. My nearly 3-year-old granddaughter Grace whose buggy I was pushing, is no longer a baby. She’s become a little girl, able to articulate her wishes and needs. Steering between shoppers on the High Street, I fished her cup out of a bag so sheContinue reading “A Wet(tish) Weekend in London”
Happy New Year! Making Memories
“Oooh, isn’t this a luxury!” said party-pooper me as we turned off the light and snuggled into our pillows. It was 11 p.m on Sunday 31st December, and a night at home had seemed the perfect conclusion to our quiet Christmas week. Such a contrast to our normal busy lives… Not that we’d hidden ourselvesContinue reading “Happy New Year! Making Memories”

A Capital Weekend
Organising a family weekend in London is a great challenge. You’re spoiled for choice, but beware the heaving crowds, the occasional rainstorm and the time it takes to travel to/from your chosen destinations. My wife Jane planned it all meticulously, and we all agreed it had been a great success.
We all needed a rest the following week…
